Diaries of Daisetz Suzuki

Taisho - Showa period, 20th c. / Books, ink on paper

Suzuki's English-language diaries. More or less complete, full-prose diaries survive for the years 1920, 1923-36, 1938-48, and 1950-55 (thirty-two in all). If we include informal notebooks and other materials, records stretch from 1917 to 1962. It is unclear when Suzuki began keeping an English diary, but the earliest known dates from 1917. It is possible that his learning from his wife, Beatrice (1878-1939), that she had kept a detailed diary continuously from her early teens spurred him to do likewise.
